A letter for Farzad, Ali and Farhad by Majid Tavakoli

Majid Tavakoli, a student activist held at Evin prison has sent out a letter to remember executed Kurdish political prisoners Farzad Kamangar, Ali Heydarian and Farhad Vakilir executed on the 10th of May by the Iranian authorities

They announced that Ali was being sent to ward 209. The phones in the halls were disconnected. I tried to call from the phone in my hall, but that too was disconnected.

When we went upstairs, Farzad said that they had announced that he too will be moved to ward 209, but it turned out to be a lie, as they ended up moving him to ward 240.

The announcement on Saturday afternoon had worried all of us. They usually announce the executions for political prisoners on Saturdays. An intense sadness took over my body, but Farzad kept saying that nothing was going to happen. He said they were only going to ask him a few questions. He knew what was awaiting him, but as always, he had a positive attitude and tried to make the best of the situation.

The complete letter can be found at:

Towards the abolition of the death penalty in Togo

10 December 2008: the Council of Togolese Ministers takes an essential first step on the path to the abolition of capital punishment with the passing of a bill aiming to abolish the death penalty.

The FIDH and its member organization in Togo, the Togolese League for Human Rights, contributed to the passing of this bill, meeting several times with Togolese authorities during high-level missions.

Parliamentarians will soon have to make a decision on this bill; they will have to overcome their differences and unite for the final abolition of this cruel and inhumane punishment.
